Twelve Arrested for DUI During Weekend Checkpoints and Roving Patrols

North Hills DUI Task Force targets areas in West Deer, Ross and Shaler townships, Etna and West View boroughs.

Twelve people were charged with driving under the influence over the weekend as police from the North Hills conducted sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols, according to North Hills DUI Task Force coordinator Scott J. Rick.

Four people were arrested at Saturday's sobriety checkpoint on Route 910 in West Deer Township. Of the 355 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, three people were arrested for possession of a controlled substance and one for possession of drug paraphernalia, Rick said in a press release.

Five citations were issued for vehicle-code violations.

Eight people were arrested for DUI during Sunday's roving patrols in Ross Township, Shaler Township, Etna Borough and West View Borough, said Rick, who is an officer for

During 93 traffic stops, two people were arrested for underage drinking. Police issued one citation for driving under suspension and three for driving without insurance. They also issued 20 citations for various vehicle-code violations.

The North Hills DUI Task Force has conducted 157 checkpoints/roving patrols during the past 16 years. In that time, 1,610 individuals have been tested for DUI, with 707 arrested.

The North Hills DUI Task Force is composed of officers from the police departments of Etna, Indiana, Northern Regional, O’Hara, Ross, Shaler, West Deer and West View.

It operates those detail in conjunction with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration Checkpoint Strike Force.
