Five Die in Pennsylvania as a Result of Hurricane Sandy

No storm-related deaths have been reported in Western Pennsylvania as of Tuesday.

As the rains and winds subside for much of the state today, five deaths have been reported across Pennsylvania as a result of the storm—all but one related to falling trees or branches,

No storm-related deaths have been reported as of Tuesday in Allegheny County, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

The first reported Sandy-related death occurred Sunday in Lancaster County, according to a 6ABC report. An elderly man was trimming a tree in Rapho Township in preparation for the storm when a limb broke and he fell to the ground and suffered multiple injuries, according to that report.

In Northampton County, a youth also died when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding hit a fallen tree, according to the Associated Press.

On Monday, an 8-year-old Susquehanna County boy died when a tree limb fell on him in Franklin Township near Montrose, according to 6ABC. A 62-year-old Berks County man also died Monday night when a 60-foot tree fell onto his home while he was taking his dogs outside in Pike Township, near Boyertown, according to the television report.

In Somerset County, a woman from Confluence also died Monday night when the car in which she was riding skidded off a snow- and slush-covered road into a pond off Route 281, according to the Daily American newspaper. The driver of the car, a 51-year-old woman, tried but was not able to get her passenger out of the car, according to the newspaper.

Sandy caused 1.2 million in the state to lose power by Tuesday. The storms caused the Pennsylvania National Guard to activate 1,600 members after President Barack Obama signed an emergency declaration for the state on Monday.
