Suspect Arrested in Bus Driver Stabbing Case

Port Authority of Allegheny County Police have arrested a suspect in the June 30 stabbing of a Port Authority bus operator.

William Tyrice Holt, 18, was arrested today and charged with one count of attempted homicide and two counts of aggravated assault, according to a Port Authority statement. Further charges may be added at a later date, police said.

"The stabbing occurred near Fifth Avenue and Market Street, Downtown Pittsburgh, after the suspect caused a disturbance onboard the bus and was asked by the operator to leave," the Port Authority statement said.

"A physical altercation followed, with the suspect ultimately punching and stabbing the bus operator. The operator suffered multiple stab wounds to the stomach and chest," the statement continued.

The Port Authority is not releasing the name of the driver, but confirmed today that he is in fair condition at UPMC Mercy Hospital.

The suspect and three other individuals traveling with him were recorded on the bus's onboard camera, police said.

These images were released to local media, which helped develop specific leads for police, according to the Port Authority statement. Witnesses also helped provide specific details about the incident to police, the statement added.

"We are grateful for the technology that enabled us to capture a clear image of the suspect, and thankful for the cooperation of witnesses and local media in helping us to identify and ultimately arrest him," said Port Authority Police Chief Steven McCauley.

Through the Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association, Port Authority has joined with other transit agencies statewide in advocating for stiffer penalties against individuals who assault public transit operators, the statement said.
