PNC Park “Great Save” Event at Tonight's Pirates Game will Reunite Cpl. Dan Hahn with Rescuers

Cpl. Dan Hahn of the suffered life-threatening injuries  while pursuing a suspect on Feb. 14.

A crew from  quickly arrived at the scene, providing oxygen and starting IVs before a LifeFlight helicopter arrived to take Hahn to Allegheny General Hospital on Pittsburgh’s North Side, hospital spokeswoman Stephanie Waite said in a statement.

Tonight, Hahn, who is , and the EMS workers will be honored at Pittsburgh's PNC Park prior to the 7 p.m. Pirates-Milwakee Brewers game as part of West Penn Allegheny Health System's and the Pirates' “Great Saves” program.

Jay Grinnell, director of Harmony EMS, said three paramedics and one emergency medical technician will be recognized at the event. 

"They did a great job," he said.

Waite said the Harmony crew took extraordinary care to immobilize Hahn’s spine, a crucial step because he had sustained multiple spinal fractures that if handled improperly could have resulted in paralysis. Hahn spent nearly three weeks at AGH, most of that time on a ventilator in the intensive care unit, followed by three weeks at Healthsouth Harmarville.

"The crew followed protocol exactly and did as they were trained, which is why we have a good outcome," Grinnell said.  

Hahn said he was pleased the EMS workers would be honored at the game.

"I’m just excited about being part of recognizing them for saving my life," he said. "That night, I could have been a quadriplegic, a paraplegic, or worse."

Waite said great saves happen every day throughout the Pittsburgh region as EMS professionals and other first response teams save lives by delivering prompt, expert care.

These “Great Saves” have been highlighted at Pirates’ games for the past two years, saluting local first responders and reuniting them with the patients they helped save, Waite said.
