Pickup Truck Backs Up, Gets Hitch Stuck in Mazda's Front Grill

Three vehicles in line at the in the Village at Pine looked a little like bumper cars after a Jan. 9 incident, according to a police report.

James Bennett, 60, of Sewickley was in the middle position in his 2000 Ford F-150 about 5:35 p.m. when he moved forward and bumped the rear bumper of a Honda Pilot, said police.

When he backed up, the truck's rear trailer hitch got stuck in the grill of the Mazda 3 behind him, police said.

Bennett told police he started to pull forward when he thought the Honda in front of him was also moving forward, said police.

“He stated that due to his right foot being in a splint, his foot slipped off the brake, while backing up and then hit (the Mazda)," the police report states.

Wexford resident Lenore Putch, 51, did not want her 2010 Mazda 3 or the truck to move until a towing company could disconnect them, the police report stated.

Roger Boff of  had Putch hold her foot on the brake while Bennett moved the truck forward to disconnect (the vehicles), said police.

In the meantime, the 2005 Honda Pilot driven by Kimberly Lewis, 42, of Wexford moved to the front of the nearby Get-Go convenience store, according to police.

Nathan Fontana, 26, of Pittsburgh was in the right curb lane in his 2009 Toyota Corolla about 5:30 p.m. when he tried to move into the left center lane, said police.

Fontana told police he did not see the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Michael Scheeper, 60, of Canton OH, that was in the left lane, police said. He said he was trying to change lanes because of traffic conditions from the construction ahead, the report stated.

No injuries were reported.

Fontana was issued a citation because his vehicle registration was expired, the report said.
