Pine Traffic Blotter: Icy Roads Cause Accidents, Three Deer Struck in Separate Incidents

Teen Uninjured after Rolling Vehicle

A 16-year-old was uninjured after rolling his car at about 4:45 p.m. Jan. 1 at the intersection of Warrendale Road and Conrad Drive in Pine Township, according to a report from

The Wexford teen told police he lost control of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero on the wet pavement on Warrendale, the report said.

The Oldsmobile sustained major body damage to the front end, side panels and roof and was towed by John B. Lombardo Complete Collision of Warrendale, said police.

“(The driver) crossed into the eastbound lane of Warrendale Road and rolled the vehicle when he struck the embankment to the left of the roadway,” the police report stated.

The teen said he was wearing his seat belt; he refused medical treatment after an evaluation by , said police.

 

Deer Killed by Vehicle on Warrendale Road

A deer was killed Dec. 29 after it ran in front of a vehicle on Warrendale Road in Pine Township, said Northern Regional police.

Robert Frank III, 51, of Wexford, was near the Babcock Boulevard intersection at about 1:15 p.m. when his 1999 Chevrolet Silverado hit the deer, police said.

The Chevrolet Silverado had front-end damage, but could be driven, said police.

 

Rear-End Collision Occurs at Route 19-North Chapel Intersection

No injuries were reported Dec. 28 after an automobile ran into the back of another vehicle when the traffic signal turned red at the North Chapel Drive intersection on Route 19/Perry Highway, police reported.

A 2008 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Sumner Bemis II, 34, of Pittsburgh, ran into the back of a 2011 Toyota Venza about 5 p.m., police said. 

The Toyota Venza was driven by MaryJane Albee, 65, of Cranberry Township, police said.

The Toyota had minor damage to the rear end, and the Chevrolet, with moderate damage to the front end, was towed by AAA, said police.

 

Deer Runs Into Woods After Being Struck by Car

Michael Fultz, 24, of Mars struck a deer with his 2010 Ford Focus on Dec. 27 as he traveled south on Pearce Mill Road about 6:30 a.m., Northern Regional police reported.

The deer ran into the woods after the collision near Graham Road. The Ford sustained damage to its passenger-side headlight and fender, police said.

 

Two Vehicles Collide on Route 19/Perry Highway Near Baierl Cadillac

Two vehicles were towed Dec. 22 after they collided on Route 19/Perry Highway when one made a left turn in front of the other, police said.

Joseph Matvya, 21, of Mars, was trying to make a left turn into the parking lot of around noon, police said. His 2006 Toyota Avalon crossed directly in front of a 1999 Ford F-150, said police.

The Ford was driven by Craig Quinn, 26, of Pittsburgh, police reported.

The passenger-side airbags on Matvya's vehicle were deployed and the passenger-side rear door, fender and wheel area were damaged, said police.

Both vehicles were towed by John B. Lombardo Complete Collision of Warrendale.

 

Collision Occurs on Route 19 Near Billco Motors

A Toyota RAV4 leaving tried to turn left onto southbound Route 19 around 11 a.m. on Dec. 22 and collided with another vehicle, Northern Regional police said.

John McKisson, 55, of Strattanville, PA, told police that traffic appeared to be stopped in both directions as he entered the road in Pine Township, but a 1995 Buick suddenly appeared in the left northbound lane and struck the front of his vehicle, the police report stated.

The Buick was driven by Mary Walck, 89, of Wexford, who told police the Toyota suddenly entered her path and she was unable to stop in time, the report added. The Buick was towed by John B. Lombardo Complete Collision of Warrendale.

McCandless-Franklin Park Ambulance Authority responded, but no one was transported to a hospital, said police.

 

Three Vehicles Involved in Chain Collision

No injuries were reported Dec. 19 after a three-vehicle chain-reaction collision on Route 19/Perry Highway in Pine township, police said.

George Green, 87, of Wexford, told police he was heading south on Route 19 at about 4:45 p.m. when he saw a vehicle in front of him had stopped to turn left onto Brooker Drive, said police.

Green said he merged his 2005 Chevrolet Silverado into the right lane to go around that vehicle, then had to quickly merge back into the left lane because the right lane was closed for construction, the police report stated.

He then ran into the back of a 1996 Honda Accord that was stopped in the right lane, police said. The Honda was driven by James Perris, 33, of Pittsburgh, said police.

The Honda ran into the back of a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Lori McNeely, 43, of Wexford, said police.

The 1996 Honda Accord was towed by John B. Lombardo Complete Collision of Warrendale with major front and rear-end damage, the police report said.

The other vehicles sustained minor damage, according to the report.

 

Two Vehicles Sliding on Icy Road End Up in Median Strip

A Wexford woman was transported to a local hospital Dec. 17 after a Ford Explorer ran into her Toyota Corolla on an icy road in Pine Township, a Northern Regional police report stated.

Beatriz Mall, 46, was transported to UPMC Passavant North Hills by Ross-Westview EMS.

She said she was traveling downhill on Village Club Drive toward the Wallace Road intersection at about 7 p.m. when she guided her 2006 Toyota Corolla onto a grassy median because she was concerned she might run into the vehicles ahead of her, according to the report.

"Due to an earlier rain and a sudden drop in temperature, the road became extremely icy," the police report stated. 

Shortly after that, a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Stephen Jackson, 23, of Valencia, ran into the back of Mall's vehicle when he had trouble stopping on the icy road and traveled onto the grassy median also, said police.

After the collision, the Ford came to rest on the sidewalk on the right side of the road, police said.

Both vehicles were towed by John B. Lombardo Complete Collision of Warrendale.

 

Northern Regional Police Car Sideswiped on Icy Road

A Northern Regional police car was sideswiped Dec. 17 when a driver lost control of his Volkswagen on an icy road in Pine Township, a police report said.

Sgt. Charles Seibert, 57, was responding to a vehicle accident at Village Run Road near Wallace Road about 7:15 p.m. when he noticed a 2003 Volkswagen sliding toward the rear of the patrol car, according to the police report.

The Volkswagen was driven by David Alan Hamm, 54, of Pittsburgh, the report stated.

Seibert saw the Volkswagen drive around the rear of the patrol car and slide alongside it, stopping with the passenger door up against the officer's driver-side door, the report states.

Hamm put his rear passenger window down and Seibert told him to put his vehicle in neutral, turn the wheels to the left and coast away from the patrol car so that he could get out, said police.

Police obtained information from Hamm and told him they would be in touch regarding damage to the patrol car, the report noted.

 

Valencia Resident Taken to Hospital after Jetta Hits Two Poles

A 43-year-old Valencia resident was taken to a local hospital Dec. 14 after hitting two poles on Bakerstown Road in Pine Township, police said.

Bonghee Sommer was transported to UPMC Passavant Hospital by McCandless-Franklin Park Ambulance Authority.

About 3:30 p.m., Sommer's 2004 Volkswagen Jetta slid on wet pavement when rounding a bend and went off the right side of the road, struck a tension pole, crossed the road while spinning completely around, and struck a second utility pole before coming to rest in the front yard of 5034 Bakerstown Road, said police.

The Jetta was towed by .

Deer Struck on Wexford Road 

No injuries were reported Dec. 13 when a deer was struck by a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Andrea Newsome, 60, of Wexford, said police.

Newsome was traveling east on Wexford Road near Hill Road about 7:30 a.m. when the deer ran in front of her, police said.

The vehicle's right front end was damaged, said police.
