Fire Damages Pine Township Home

A neighbor calls 9-1-1 after spotting smoke at the home on Scarlet Circle.

Wexford Volunteer Fire Company firefighters said a malfunctioning ventilation fan is to blame for a fire that damaged a Scarlet Circle home under construction in Pine Township Thursday night.

Fire Chief Tim Flaherty said firefighters were called to the home at about 10 p.m. after a neighbor walking a dog saw smoke coming from the house.

Flaherty said Northern Regional police officers arrived on the scene first and were able to knock out the flames from the burning ventilation fan with a fire extinguisher.

Firefighters doused flames that had spread to a drum sander in the home that was being used to refinish the floors, he said.

The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire. Flaherty said the owners were spending the night in a hotel because of fumes from a refinishing coat contractors had placed on their living room floors earlier that day.

Flaherty said damage to the home was limited to the construction equipment. He also said there was a burn spot on the living room floor and some scorched ceramic tile.

The house also sustained heavy smoke damage.

“It’s pretty significant smoke damage,” Flaherty said.

The chief said the Allegheny Fire Marshal is investigating the fire, but that it does not appear to be suspicious.

The Marshall, Adams Area, Ingomar, Highland, Bradford Woods and Cranberry fire departments assisted Wexford firefighters at the scene.
