Crews Battle Fire at Century-Old Pine Township Home

Firefighters rescue a cat from the burning building on Old State Road.

Several fire companies battled a blaze on Old State Road Monday afternoon that heavily damaged a Pine Township home.

Wexford Volunteer Fire Company Chief Tim Flaherty said crews were called to the home located near Wexford Bayne Road at about 2:15 p.m. for reports of a fire in the laundry room on the first floor of the home.

The blaze quickly spread through the building. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the three-story home, which was built more than a century ago.

"The house is pretty old, so there were a lot of void spaces in attic and the roof structure," the chief said of why the blaze spread so quickly.

Flaherty said one of the owners was at home when the fire started. She and two dogs escaped unharmed.

Firefighters later rescued a cat from the burning building.

Allegheny County property records identify the homeowner as Adam Cohen. The restored colonial-style house was built in 1861.

Flaherty said firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 minutes. Crews were still on the scene at about 4 p.m. Monday in case any hotspots needed extinguished.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but does not appear to be suspcious, Flaherty said. The Allegheny County Fire Marshal has been called to investigate.

Wexford firefighters were assisted by crews from Richland, Adams Area, Cranberry, North Hampton, West Deer, Marshall and Zelienople.
