Cranberry Firefighters to Hold Dedication of Memorial With 9/11 Wreckage

Most everyone who is old enough can remember where they were and what they were doing when the first of two planes struck the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

Now they can touch a piece from the day’s wreckage.

The public is welcome to attend the event, which also will feature the area’s other first responders. 

The memorial itself is structured around that fell from one of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11. A likeness of the New York City block where the buildings were located also has been etched into the concrete surrounding the beam.

According to Jeff Berneburg, chairman of the fire company’s 9/11 committee, the I-beam was purposely laid at a height and in a way that encourages visitors to come up and lay their hands on it.

“The biggest thing is people will want to touch it,” he has said.

After a year's worth of paperwork, to the John F. Kennedy airport hanger—where Ground Zero artifacts are stored—to pick up the steel and haul it back to Cranberry.
