Starting College

Sharing my thoughts on the first few weeks of college.

As many students have just started school, I have been in college for more than two weeks. It is weird to think that I will not be back at the high school this year.

I commute to La Roche College and really found that it worked for me. Commuting gives me benefits not available to a resident. I am able to come back and forth as I please, not to mention the home-cooked meals. I also have a quiet place to study at home, for which I am thankful after hearing stories about the loud parties in the dorms.

What really surprised me about college is all the free time I have. I am not used to having three classes a day instead of six. Some days I get to sleep in and one day a week I am done with class by 11 a.m.

With all the free time comes lots of studying though. After two weeks I am already preparing for two exams and a paper. Because a professor is trying to cover a lot of material in one semester, I can find myself flying through a chapter in only two classes. Having all this free time means managing it well.

One similarity I find to the high school is the class sizes at La Roche. Instead of classes with 100-plus students as in many universities, my class sizes range from 20 to 30. In my Honors College Writing class there are only five students including me!

This helps me get the most out of my college experience because of the individualized attention given. I am really enjoying my college experience so far and can’t wait to see what will happen in the next four years to come.
