Tornado and Flash Flood Watches in Effect

Watch area includes Allegheny and Butler counties.

Tornado and flash flood watches are in effect for Allegheny and Butler counties for Wednesday night.

The tornado watch is in effect until 10 p.m. and the flash flood watch remains in effect until late tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

"Showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall will be across the region through tonight," the weather service stated in its alert. "Rainfall amounts over one inch per hour are possible and would produce flash flooding."

The National Weather Service also warned that the storms could produce wind gusts up to 55 mph, which can result in broken tree limbs, flying debris and possibly power interruptions.

"Drivers need to take extra care as the winds can affect steering, particularly of high-profile vehicles. The fast winds are from the south so this can cause a crosswind on highways oriented west to east like Interstates 70, 80 and 76 (the Pennsylvania Turnpike)," according to a special weather statement.
