Update: No Single-Lane Restrictions on I-79 For Friday Night

Work canceled for highway between Exits 73 and 75.

UPDATE -- Work that was planned for I-79 Friday night has been canceled because of the weather forecast.

Originally, PennDOT planned to take the interstate down to single lanes in the area of the bridge over Mingo Road between Exits 73 and 75 in Marshall.

Friday evening's forecast for rain and wind changed all that.

Friday is going to be decidedly less fun for this week – and not just because your taxes are due.

Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, there will be single-lane traffic on Interstate 79 in the area of the bridge over Mingo Road between Exits 73 and 75 in Marshall Township, according to a press release from PennDOT.

Crews will be milling and paving median shoulders and painting edge lines. The restrictions will last until 7 a.m. Saturday.

There is some good news. Because of the Pittsburgh Penguins home playoff game, the northbound lane restrictions will not begin until midnight Friday.

The construction is part of a $10 million project that includes deck replacements, latex overlays, expansion dam replacements, substructure repairs, bituminous paving, drainage and guide rail upgrades, pavement markings, culvert cleaning and stream restoration, and other improvements on several I-79 bridges.

All ramps and exits will remain open during construction.

The overall project is expected to be complete by fall, according to PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi. The prime contractor for the project is Swank Associated Companies, Inc. of New Kensington.

PennDOT advises motorists to use caution, slow down, and expect changing traffic patterns when traveling through the area. Drivers also can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 to check traffic conditions on major roadways before traveling.
