Places Where You Might Get Stuck in Traffic This Weekend

PennDOT tells us what's under construction.

Let's see. Where will the traffic snarls be this weekend? It's spring, after all, and time for road improvements ... which we really, really appreciate after they are done.

Here's what PennDOT District 11 says is going on this weekend, May 6-9, if the weather cooperates:

I-79 Guide Rail Repairs

Intermittent, short-term single lane and shoulder closures will occur in several locations on I-79 for guide rail repairs between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the following areas:

  • Northbound between the Mount Nebo (Exit 68) and Wexford (Exit 73) interchanges
  • Southbound between the Carnegie (Exit 57) and Bridgeville (Exit 54) interchanges

I-79 Utility Work

Traffic in both directions on Interstate 79 in Marshall Township will be stopped intermittently on Sunday morning, May 8, weather permitting. Brief traffic stoppages of 15 minutes or less will occur between 7 and 8 a.m. Sunday in the area between the Freeport Road overpass and the Cranberry (Exit 76) interchange. Crews will be crossing fiber optic communication lines over I-79.

Crews will continue milling and paving southbound I-79 from the Neville Island Bridge (Exit 64) to the Crafton/Route 60 interchange (Exit 60). Single-lane traffic will occur from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 6, through 6 a.m. on Monday, May 9. Northbound traffic on I-79 will not be affected.

Route 28 Roadwork

The northbound left lane on Route 28 (Allegheny Valley Expressway) will be closed in the area of the Etna/Route 8 interchange from 8 p.m. Friday through approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday. Contractor crews will improve ride quality by replacing concrete on northbound Route 28 at former crossover locations between the Etna off-ramp (Exit 4) and the Route 8 interchange.

Parkway East (I-376) Roadwork

Crews will be replacing pavement transitions at several bridge locations between the Grant/Stanwix Street (Exit 71) and Edgewood Swissvale (Exit 77) interchanges. Lane closures will be necessary to perform the improvements. Work will occur from 7 p.m. on Friday through 6 p.m. on Saturday according to the following schedule:

Inbound (westbound)

  • Single-lane traffic in the area of the bridge over Brady Street (under the Birmingham Bridge) from 9 p.m. on Friday through 1 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Single-lane closure (two of three lanes open) at the bridge over Bates Street/Oakland Interchange (Exit 73) from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday. At 10 p.m. two of three lanes will be closed allowing only one inbound lane to remain open overnight through 9 a.m. on Saturday. Then two lanes will be reopened with only one inbound lane closed through 5 p.m. Saturday.
  • Single-lane traffic approaching the Squirrel Hill Tunnel in the area of the bridge over Commercial Street from 9 p.m. on Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday.

Outbound (eastbound)

  • Single-lane traffic (two of three lanes closed) at the bridge over Bates Street/Oakland Interchange (Exit 73) from midnight Friday through 10 a.m. on Saturday. Then two lanes will be reopened with only one outbound lane closed through 6 p.m. Saturday.
  • Single-lane traffic from the city side (west) entrance of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel through the tunnel to the area of the bridge over Commercial Street from midnight Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday.

Parkway West (I-376) Bridge Inspection

Single-lane traffic on the inbound (eastbound) Parkway West (I-376) at the Carnegie Interchange (Exit 65) will occur from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7. Crews will conduct routine inspection activities on the bridge that carries the inbound Parkway West over Whiskey Run.

I-579 Overhead Bridge Work

Single-lane closures on I-579 (Crosstown Boulevard) between the Liberty Bridge and Forbes Avenue in the City of Pittsburgh will occur as needed from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.
