40th Street Bypass Lanes on Southbound Route 28 to Close Nightly

Access to the 40th Street Bridge will be restricted this weekend.

The southbound bypass lanes on Route 28 at the 40th Street Bridge intersection will be closed nightly through late October, PennDOT District 11 announced.

All southbound traffic will take the left lane traveling through the 40th Street Bridge intersection in Millvale.

Crews will be installing light poles and fencing on the new wall above the southbound bypass lanes. Work will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights through Oct. 31.

This weekend, the intersection of 40th Street and southbound Route 28 will be closed.

Access to and from southbound Route 28 to/from the 40th Street Bridge and from Millvale to the 40th Street Bridge will be restricted.

Crews will be reconstructing the intersection. The closures will occur from 8 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday.

Access from the 40th Street Bridge to northbound Route 28 and Millvale will remain open.    

During the restrictions southbound traffic wishing to access the 40th Street Bridge will be detoured.    

Southbound Route 28/Millvale access to 40th Street Bridge:

o   Continue inbound on Route 28 using the new bypass lanes

o   Take exit to East Ohio Street

o   Make left onto Chestnut Street and cross the 16th Street Bridge

o   Left onto Liberty Avenue

o   Left onto 32th or 34th Street

o   Right onto Penn Avenue continuing to Butler Street

o   Continue on Butler Street through Lawrenceville

o   Access intersection with the 40th Street Bridge     

Traffic from the 40th Street Bridge/Lawrenceville wishing to access Route 28 should use Butler Street to Penn Avenue to the 16th Street Bridge.     

The $23.5 million Route 28 East Ohio Street Improvement Project 40th Street Bridge work covers the area from about 1,300 feet north of the 31st Street Bridge intersection to approximately 2,560 feet north of the 40th Street Bridge interchange.

The project includes widening and reconstruction, drainage, concrete barrier, concrete curb and sidewalk, highway lighting, signing and pavement marking, sign structures, signals and ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) installation, wall construction, water line and sewer relocation, demolition, and other construction. 

The Trumbull Corp. of Pittsburgh is the prime contractor.
