Bites Nearby: The Flame Barbeque

Cranberry eatery serves good barbeque in a casual atmosphere.

Overview: Flame Barbeque is a small and very casual restaurant in Ogle Station Plaza along Route 19 in Cranberry Township. Seating is limited, but the majority of its business is takeout.

Decor:The focus of Flame is good, casual eating. It isn’t fine dining for which you dress up; it is a place for jeans, flip-flops and good barbeque. Bright colors and a windowed front give it a modern, happy feel.

The drinks: Bottled soft drinks and iced tea are offered in the cooler.

Entrees: There are several ways that you can have your barbeque at Flame: sandwiches, platters of various sizes, ribs (but only on Wednesdays or Saturdays unless you preorder), and even burritos and rice dishes.

Several sandwich offerings include hot sausage and lamb. They advertise themselves as “Home of the Boss Hog Sandwich,” but we didn’t try it.

Side dishes include baked beans, black-eyed peas, coleslaw, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and a few others.

The platters are a nice option for those who want to try different versions of the barbeque. I had pulled pork and brisket, my daughter had the pulled pork, and my husband tried the chicken and pulled pork.

For sides I had the collard greens, which I loved – not greasy as they often are (when you can even find them in the Pittsburgh area) - and the black-eyed peas, another rare find and equally good.

Eliza had the macaroni and cheese. Even though she said it wasn’t as good as Mom's (gotta love that girl), she said it was quite good. The owner told us that it was homemade with three kinds of cheeses. Paul enjoyed the black-eyed peas and sweet potatoes with praline topping.

Prices are $4.99 to $8.99 for sandwiches, ribs are $11.99 for a half rack, and platters run from $6.99 to $11.99.

Flame has a huge delivery menu with “Pickup and Go Party Packs” and “Pickup and Go Party Pans,” both with a 24-hour request order time. I would love to try some of the ribs for a nice family picnic at home during a lazy, summer evening. A full steam pan with three full racks of ribs, one pint of BBQ sauce and 12 pieces of cornbread is $74.95.

Desserts: The restaurant didn’t have any desserts that we could see. Even if it did, we wouldn’t have ordered any because we were stuffed. There are desserts listed on the menu for dine-in and on the takeout menu.

Services: At Flame, you walk up to the counter and order, or you can call ahead and place your order for dine-in or to go. The only person when we were there was the friendly owner, Louis Kampi, who served as cook, server and greeter. Meals are served in plastic baskets and Styrofoam cups – again, very casual.

Hours: Flame is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday for pickup and catering only.

Address: Ogle Station Plaza, 20300 Route 19, Cranberry Township, 724-772-2270.
