Bites Nearby: North Country Brewing Company Sports a Rustic Look

Slippery Rock brew works offers delicious beer and fun food.

North Country Brewing is a brewery and eatery located in Slippery Rock. Looking like a bar you might expect from somewhere out west, this is one of our favorite places in the area. You can go into North Country after hiking or after a movie and feel at home. It seems like we always end up here after a long hike at

North Country is a rustic bar with lots and lots of wood inside. The building has been around since 1805, according to the restaurant's website. It is a fun place with lots of eclectic items on the walls. A nice outdoor seating area is ideal for warm fall days and nights.

North Country Brewing has its own beers that are not only delicious but many have fun names in honor of local places and people. Station 33 Firehouse Red is named in honor of the local firehouse, and part of the proceeds from this beer are donated to the organization – and the beer tastes pretty good, too.

Paddlers Pale Ale is named in honor of those who paddle nearby Slippery Rock Creek.

Owners Bob and Jodi McCaffrey have their own special brews – Jodi’s E.S.P. and McCaffrey’s Ale.

North Country offers samplers of its beers. Six 5-ounce samples are $6, and nine 5-ounce samples are $9. It is a great way to try several of the restaurant's beers at once, plus I love the little sampler trays the beer comes on. It's silly, I know, but fun.

North Country also has a nice wine list including local wineries La Casa Narcissi, Angeli Winery, Volant Mill Winery and Winfield Winery. Of course, non-alcoholic drinks are offered as well.

North Country offers a large selection of appetizers including various dips and platters. We passed on the frog legs and wings, both $7.99, but shared the Backwoods Country dip, an artichoke dip with tortilla chips for $7.99. Based on the rate at which it disappeared, I would say my crowd loved it.

North Country offers a wide selection for “carnivores and herbivores”. Runnin’ Bull is a roast beef sandwich for $9.99, and Zupprimi is a zucchini sandwich for $7.99, just to give you an idea of the sandwiches. The menu also offers a wide variety of salads.

My husband had the Black and Blue burger, a burger topped with bleu cheese and bacon, and raved about it. He had a choice of regular Angus Beef [$9.49], Buffalo [$13.49] or Farm-to-Fork Angus from North Country Cattle Company. [$9.99].

One of the teen sons chose Ye Old Fish and Chips for $12.99 and enjoyed it as well. The other teen son chose Ma Ya Siesta Burger, and I chose the Garlic Burger, and we both loved them. I recommend ordering the delicious sweet potato chips for your side.

The menu also offers North Country Ribs, Garlic and Rosemary Chicken, Shrimp Scampi and North Country Garden Cakes, just to list a few other entrees.

A wide variety of desserts include fudge brownies, apple crisp, blueberry buckle and rocky road cake, which cost $4.99 to $6.99. We had to pass but plan on going back just for dessert. In the past, we had the blueberry buckle, and it was delicious, just like everything else.

The waiter had a great sense of humor and was patient when I asked him about 1,000 questions about the various beers. The takeout boxes cost 25 cents each and are environmentally friendly materials, he explained that to us when we requested several.

We love the North Country Brewing Company and have always had a fun waiter. Considering we usually go in after hiking and look fairly dirty, they are always kind and never mention the mud we drag in.
