College visit to University of Denver

By Aafke Loney

Ahhh, college visits.  Parents of high school juniors and seniors are mapping out the chosen colleges from their children’s top, “I am so going to get in”,  “I think I probably will get in”, and “Not a chance will I get in but anything’s possible” schools.  Since this is our fourth go around with college visits we know the drill.  Our daughter has her list and we are checking it off.  We have already stopped in at Boston College, Boston University, Kings College, and Messiah College.  It was time to head west to Denver, Colorado.  Focus: The Morgridge College of Education.

The Morgridge College of Education is located on the beautiful campus of the University of Denver, in Denver, Colorado. The Masters Degree in Education is focused on Curriculum and Instruction with an embedded Teacher License available within 5 years. This is considered a 4 and 1, or four years of undergraduate study at University of Denver’s main campus followed by one year of graduate study at the Morgridge College of Education. We spoke with one of admission counselors at the Morgridge College of Education and they recommended that students interested in education as a career choice to consider a dual degree; meaning major in a chosen undergraduate degree from the many majors offered at the University of Denver.  Once the student has decided on their undergraduate degree they can begin their application into the Morgridge College of Education their junior year.  The college of education offers two options: Graduate Certificate Program, providing a Colorado Initial Teaching License and the MA Program which includes both a Colorado Initial Teaching License and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from DU’s Morgridge College of Education.  The areas of licensure offered are in elementary, secondary (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) and K-12 (Art, Spanish).
