Winter Returns with Overnight Coating of Snow

Western Pennsylvania residents awoke to a coating of snow Saturday morning as a mild winter transformed into a "real" winter to show us that it is still February, after all.

Strong winds that moved into the area Friday disrupted power and toppled trees.

As of 7:30 a.m., Duquesne Light reported 127 customers were without power, down from the initial 4,500 scattered outages in Allegheny and Beaver counties.

Customers will see power restored by Saturday afternoon, according to Duquesne Light spokesman Joseph H. Vallarian.

The National Weather Service forecasts scattered areas of snow showers will continue to move southeast across the region into the afternoon.

"In heavier snow showers, a quick coating to one-half inch will make untreated roads slick and hazardous. West to northwest winds gusting to 35 mph will at times reduce visibility," according to the weather service website.

"Travelers should be prepared for quick changes to visibility and road conditions. Use extra caution and reduce speed," according to an NWS special weather statement.
