Tires, Couch, Windshield Among Items Removed from North Park in Earth Day Clean-Up

The event was organized by the Friends of North Park and the North Area Environmental Council.

Dozens of volunteers celebrated Earth Day 2013 by helping to clean up North Park on Saturday, April 20. 

Sponsored by the Friends of North Park and the North Area Environmental Council, a group of 44 adults and another 19 children and teenagers spent Monday removing a lot of trash and debris from the park. They collected the following:

  • 58 Bags of Trash
  • 8 Tires
  • 1 Couch
  • 1 Barrel
  • 1 Road Sign
  • 1 Car Seat
  • 1 Broken Windshield

Several local businesses, including McDonald's restaurant, Bruegger's Bagels, and Cumberland Woods Village donated food and drinks for the volunteers.

There is a Lake and Land Clean Up scheduled at 12 p.m. Saturday, May 4. Below are the details:

WHAT: We plan on removing litter from the lakes in watercrafts and along the shorelines on foot. You will need to supply your own watercraft, equipment and PFD. Note: Motors of any type are not permitted on North Park lakes without permission of the Park Director.

Pittsburgh Trails Advocacy Group (PTAG) has also scheduled a “Gala” trail workday. For more details, please visit http://www.ptagtrails.org/node/895

Gloves, safety vests and trash bags will be supplied. Wear sturdy footwear, long pants and long sleeve shirts. Eye protection is encouraged. To reduce waste, bring your own water bottle. 

Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of each event.
