‘Scene’ at Pine Community Day: Watermelon Eating Contest, Petting Zoo and More

Check out video and photos of the celebration.

Despite the threat of rain, which caused the event to be moved from Community Park to the Pine Community Center, it was nothing but clear skies Saturday as Pine Township celebrated its 24th annual Community Day.

The celebration included food and beverages as well as a variety of games and crafts for kids. There also was a watermelon eating contest, a pie-eating contest, pony rides, a petting zoo and much more.

The Wexford Fire Company also used the event as an opportunity to show off its new ladder truck.

Fire Chief Tim Flaherty said the fire company bought the refurbished truck, which boasts a 95-foot ladder, from Seagrave Apparatus. The truck was once used by a fire department in New York, he said.

“We decided to look at the used market to find it at a reduced cost,” Flaherty said of buying a refurbished truck.

The truck, which is 18 years old, cost the department about $400,000. A brand new ladder truck would have cost the department about $1 million, Flaherty estimated.

“It was a significant savings,” he said.

Flaherty said the ladder truck already got some use last week as firefighters responded to a home struck by lightning. While the strike did not cause the home to catch fire, Flaherty said volunteers used the truck to lift crews to the home’s roof to assess the damage.

“Everyone is really excited about it,” he said of the truck.

In case you missed the excitement, check out photos and video of the watermelon-eating contest, which was hosted by Rep. Mike Turzai, the petting zoo, rides and more.
