Route 228 Bridge Replacement Project Begins Monday in Adams Township

PennDOT is replacing a structurally deficient two-lane bridge with a five-lane edifice.

Big changes are coming to Route 228 in Adams Township—and it will have an effect on area commuters.

On Monday, PennDOT begins replacing the two-lane bridge over the CSX/B&O Railroad with a new five-lane edifice. The current bridge, which was built in 1961, is structurally deficient, according to PennDOT.

It carries about 16,122 vehicles per day on it, PennDOT said.

Traffic impacts will include nighttime lane restrictions and alternating traffic when necessary. Varying width restrictions may be in place at times throughout the project.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and minimize distractions while driving through work zones. Pay attention to flaggers and obey the traffic control devices; please drive responsibly in work zones.

Work is expected to be complete by September 2014.
