Region's Next 'Hard to Recycle' Collection Event Set for July 16

Take your items to John A. Brashear High School.

Did you finish up this year's spring cleaning with a bunch of items that need recycling?

Then mark July 16 on your calendar -- that is the date for the third of four "hard to recycle" collection events in 2011 coordinated by the Pennsylvania Resources Council.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you may take recycling items to John A. Brashear High School at 590 Crane Ave. in Pittsburgh.

The Pennsylvania Resources Council is working in partnership with the Allegheny County Health DepartmentColcom Foundation and NewsRadio 1020 KDKA (among others) to provide opportunities for area residents to properly dispose of a wide variety of materials.

The fourth event will be held Sept. 17 at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills, 590 Pittsburgh Mills Circle, Tarentum Borough.

Individuals may drop off televisions, e-waste, cell phones, printer/toner cartridges, compact fluorescent bulbs, alkaline batteries and tires without rims for recycling.

Most items are collected for free, including televisions and computers. Participant fees for tires, batteries and miscellaneous e-waste are posted on the PRC Zero Waste Pittsburgh website, www.zerowastepgh.org.

"Our list of items collected at no cost continues to grow each year," PRC Regional Director Dave Mazza said, "and we're excited to offer free disposal of televisions and computers, monitors, mice and keyboards in 2011.

"We accept many items at no cost, including cell phones, compact fluorescent bulbs, and ink and toner cartridges at no cost to participants."

A new partnership with Off the Floor Pittsburgh will enable individuals to drop off usable furniture such as dressers and beds at PRC collection events at no cost.

Off the Floor then distributes the materials to local low-income families in need of furnishings. Check www.offthefloorpittsburgh.org for more details concerning acceptable items.

"PRC supports the practice of 'reduce, reuse, recycle,'" Mazza said, "so we're excited to expand the focus on 'hard to recycle' collections to also include items meant for reuse.

"Two years ago, we established a very successful partnership with Global Links to collect medical equipment and supplies at our events, and last year, we began working with Construction Junction to collect usable building material."

At all 2011 collection events, individuals can drop off the following materials for reuse at no cost:

  • medical equipment and supplies, such as crutches, nebulizers and wheelchairs, for distribution through Global Links;
  • usable building materials, such as light fixtures, doors and windows, for resale by Construction Junction;
  • and gently used furniture, such as beds, dressers, tables and chairs, for distribution by Off The Floor.

The 2011 campaign is presented by PRC's Zero Waste Pittsburgh project in partnership with the Allegheny County Health Department, Colcom Foundation, eLoop llcLiberty Tire Recycling, Global Links, Construction Junction, Off the Floor Pittsburgh and NewsRadio 1020 KDKA.
