Patch Picks: Time to Start Planning for Summer Camps

Pine Community Center has several camps from which to choose.

With snow swirling around you, it probably is a little tough to imagine sending the kids to summer camp. But, it’s time to think of ways to keep the children entertained when they are home from school. Pine Community Center already has plans in place for June, July and August. These options allow you to stay right in the Pine-Richland community.

1. Pine and Richland Summer Recreation Program

Who: Ages 6 to 12

What: A six-week summer recreation program.

When: June 20 – July 29, Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon.

Where: Pine Community Center

How much: Six-week registration fee is $140 per child. Cost includes summer recreation T-shirt. Families having three or more children will pay a maximum of $420 per household for the basic program.

2. Chemicals, Cells & Crime

Who: Ages 5 to 12

What: A hands-on program where campers examine a mock crime scene and learn about DNA, explore their senses and test the elements of electricity. Shhh! Don’t tell them they’re learning about science. They’ll be too busy having fun to notice.

When: Aug. 1-5 from 9 a.m. to noon

Where: Pine Community Center

How much: $140 for members; $160 for non-members.

3. Challenger Soccer Camp

Who: Ages 3-16

What: Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp does it all -- individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, small-sided games, coached scrimmages, and a daily World Cup tournament. (Fee includes free ball & T-shirt).   

When: Aug. 1-5

Where: Pine Community Center

How much and times:

First Kicks: 9-10 a.m. for ages 3-4. Fee: $85 for members, $101 for non-members.

Mini Soccer: 10:30 a.m.-noon for ages 5-6. Fee: $102 for members, $125 for non-members

World Camp: 9 a.m.-noon for ages 6-9. Fee: $135 for members, $150 for non-members.

Half-Day Player Development: 1-4 p.m. for ages 10-16. Fee: $135 for members, $150 for non-members.

4. Animals, Energy & Robots

Who: Ages 5-12

What: A camp where children explore the energy of motion and life under the ocean's surface. Campers also will learn about robots, green energy sources, Newton's three laws of motion and more. Children will build their own Robot Hand and learn about the life cycles of their favorite animals.

When: Aug. 8-12 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Where: Pine Community Center

How much: $140 for members; $160 for non-members.

5. FUNuation Tekademy Camps

Who: Ages 8-11

What: 2D Video Game Design with Scratch Camp – Campers design a basic computer video game (no experience needed), learn computer graphics techniques and animation fundamentals.

What else: Stop Motion Animation Camp -- Kids learn the stop-animation technique to make films using the program Scratch. This animation technique has been used in “ Wallace and Gromit” and “James and the Giant Peach.”

When: Aug. 15-19 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Pine Community Center

How much: $224 for members per camp, $257 for non-members per camp.
