Nearby: Zelienople Native Among Those Killed in Navy Yard Shooting

A Zelienople native was among 12 people killed during a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard Monday,the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Frank Kohler, 50, was a Slippery Rock University graduate and the youngest of five children, according to the newspaper.

Zelienople manager Don Pepe told the PG that Kohler’s brother, Harvey Kohler, is the electric department superintendent for the borough.

"It's just a terrible thing to see your friends going through," Pepe said. "They were a very close family.”

According to the Associated Press, Frank Kohler, who was living in Lexington Park, Maryland before the shooting, only occasionally worked in the Navy Yard. His work brought him there Monday.

A married father of two college-age daughters, Frank Kohler was a past president of the Rotary Club in Lexington Park, the AP reports. He also was a Steelers fan and an avid golfer. He graduated from SRU in 1985 with a degree in computer science, the AP said.
