Looking for Sweets for Your Sweetie?

Where to buy Valentine gifts for anyone.

People tend to go into a panic over what to buy their sweetie for Valentine's Day, (and by "people" we of course mean "men"), but it shouldn't really be that big of a deal. Unless you're planning an elaborate and memorable proposal, the best Valentine's Day gifts are just some little something that shows you're thinking of your special someone.

And it's not just men buying for women, even though that particular scenario tends to be the focus of advertisements and jokes. Kids need valentines and treats for school, we parents buy for our kids, and kids buy for grandma and grandpa.

Pine-Richland Patch is always looking for good deals and fun places to shop. Here are a few places where you can find gifts for that special someone.

Pine - 155 Towne Centre Drive, Wexford. Tel: 724-934-0155

Richland - 5600 William Flynn Highway, Gibsonia. Tel: 724-443-7400

Both Giant Eagle locations have full-service flower shops - although they don't deliver. They also have candy and small, themed gifts, such as stuffed animals and porcelain items. Fresh flower bouquets are available for $8.99. A single-layer heart cake is $5.99 and a quarter-sheet chocolate chip message cookie is $7.99.

2. Gifted Hands

100 Church Road, Wexford. Tel: 724-934-2224

I walked into Gifted Hands just behind a man who told owner Shelley Hoaré that his wife buys a ton of stuff there. Hoaré recommended a gift certificate -- which would be a good idea for anyone. This lovely shop, filled with handmade items from 32 local artisans, has many one-of-a-kind gifts for children to adults.

3. KLS Landscaping and Supply

5960 William Flynn Highway, Gibsonia. Tel: 724-443-3990

It's easy to miss this tiny shop located on Route 8, almost as far north as you can get and still be in Richland. Owner Robert Klinefelter and designer Jennifer Nicotero started  their floral business one year ago -- on Valentine's Day. There's more to the story, too, but that will run as a separate article on Pine-Richland Patch on Valentine's Day. In the meantime, KLS has a special on roses -- $19.95 a dozen, cash and carry. Can't beat that.

4. Popcorn-n-That

10263 Perry Highway, Wexford. Tel: 724-933-8010

The flavor of the month for February is drizzled white chocolate cinnamon caramel, and it's delicious. This bright yellow store, just past the Pine border in McCandless, has popcorn and popcorn gift presentations in every flavor imaginable. A selection of gifts are available for under $20; click here to see the Valentine's Day selection.

5. Sarah's Hallmark

Village at Pine, Wexford. Tel: 724-935-5410

Hallmark had tons of Valentine's Day merchandise on display, more than any other place we visited. It has racks of cards, from the romantic to the funny, candy, many gift items, lots of stuffed animals, and collectible figurines. Hallmark is known for affordable, quality gifts, and it has something for everyone.

6. Shop 'n Save

5375 William Flynn Highway, Gibsonia. Tel: 724-443-8420

Shop 'n Save has a full-service flower shop, but the store doesn't deliver. It has particularly nice Mylar balloons, as well as a selection of candies, stuffed animals and small gifts. Valentine mixed bouquets start at $5.99. A six-count package of Valentine cupcakes are priced at $2.99 and a 12-ounce Valentine's Day brownie is $3.49.

7. Weischedel Florist and Greenhouses

4039 Gibsonia Road, Gibsonia. Tel: 724-443-1400

Owner Lynn Martig says what's unique about Valentine's Day in the floral industry is that it's one day. You can't deliver the day before and you can't deliver the day after. That makes for crunch time, but Weischedel has always been able to keep up -- even on days of bad weather. Inside Martig's shop are lots of beautiful silk arrangements, and she does live flower arrangements as well. In addition to roses, tulips are always a popular Valentine's Day item -- maybe because they are a harbinger of spring -- and this year she'll have daffodils available as well.

Check out the website and you'll see the Radiantly Red Tulips selection is $32.95, while Teleflora's Precious Pink Tulips are $34.95. A lovely arrangement called Teleflora's Precious Love is $22.95.
