Get Out Weekend Planner: Rocky Bleier Salute, Smorgasbord, Play and More

'Treasure Taste' at Hartwood Acres teaches you about edible plants.

1. Kick off your weekend early with St. Barnabas Health  System’s key event, the Founder's Day 2011 Black 'n Gold Charity "Ball." Hometown favorite, Rocky Bleier, four-time Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Champion and Vietnam Veteran, is the 2011 St. Barnabas Hance Award recipient and will be honored at the event. When/Where:  Thursday, April 28, at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh. Tailgate reception begins at 5:30 p.m., dinner and program begin at 7 p.m.

Why go: Everyone loves Rocky Bleier and proceeds from Founder’s Day benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund.

2. Once again it’s show time at Kean Theatre! "Noises Off," part of the 2011 Broadway Series, is this weekend.

When/Where: Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30, with the show at 8 p.m. If you opt for the dinner-and-show package, dinner at s starts at 6 p.m. On Sunday, May 1, the show starts at 2 p.m. If you opt for the lunch-and-show deal, lunch at Atria's begins at 12:30 p.m. The Kean Theatre is located at 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia. 

Why go: Billed as “The funniest play ever!” by the New York Times, this is sure to provide laughs and great entertainment.

3. Tired of leftover ham? Need to lighten up after all that chocolate? How about the Spring Salad Smorgasbord?

Why go: You don’t have to make dinner and you can eat healthy for a great price.

4. Everyone wants to be a Superhero and this weekend, you can be one! Bonus – you are even encouraged to dress up like one. The Superhero Run is a 1K or 5K (your choice) run to benefit CASA of Allegheny County.

Why go: The run benefits CASA of Allegheny County and the prevention of child abuse. Plus ...  the sponsors encourage you to dress as your favorite superhero! How fun is that?

5. Do you have prescription drugs you need to dispose of but don’t know how and where? The National Take Back Initiative can help. Click here for more information.

When/Where: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at County Police  - North Park Station, 700 West Ridge Drive, Allison Park, 724-935-1901.

Why go: According to the National Take Back Initiative website: “More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.” To combat this trend and to help dispose of unused prescription drugs, the DEA partnered with local and state law enforcement agencies to host the first National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in September 2010. It was such a huge success, the second event will be held this Saturday.

Price: Free.  

6. Does your teen need a summer job? How about the tried and true job of babysitting? American Red Cross babysitting training is a great way to let prospective customers know you are serious about the job.

When/Where: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at, 100 Pine Park Drive, Wexford. Contact 724-624-1636 ext. 3.

 Why: Babysitting is a great job for teens and this course prepares them for the task.

7) There are many native plants that you can eat and some have medicinal purposes. But which ones are safe and which ones are purported to help you? Attend Hartwood Mansion’s “Treasure Taste” this weekend. For more information, click here or call 412-767-9200.

When/Where: 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at Hartwood Acres, 200 Hartwood Acres.

Why go: It is fun to know what plants are edible and which ones may actually cure a headache or sooth a burn. Maybe you can even stop weeding and start eating!
