Get Out Weekend Planner: Kean Idol, Run/Walk at North Park and More

See Jackie Evancho, walk or bike for a cause and start a good, happy book this weekend.

What will you do on a springtime weekend?

1. . The singing part of the competition has its grand finale and there will be a special presentation of the by none other than Jackie herself.

When/Where: 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, at Kean Theatre, 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia.

Why go: The Kean Idol competition has the reputation of giving wonderful amateur vocalists and dancers a venue to provide great entertainment and gain experience. Proceeds benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund.

2. Big Blue Quest 5K Run/2K Fun Walk to benefit colon and rectal cancer awareness and research. Sponsored by West Penn Allegheny Health Systems.

When/Where: 8 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at , Babcock Boulevard and Ingomar Road, Allison Park. Event begins at South Ridge (pool area) at North Park. 

Why go: You can enjoy being outdoors on a spring morning while benefiting an important cause.

Price: $10

3. Steel City Showdown, a unique bicycle race that promotes fitness, bicycle racing and the city of Pittsburgh!

The race begins at Federal Street near PNC Park and continues across the Roberto Clemente and Andy Warhol bridges on an .8-mile closed course.

When/Where:  8:30 a.m. to 1:40 p.m., Sunday, April 17, 115 Federal St., Pittsburgh, near PNC Park. Start times vary, please check website for details.  

Why go: This fun event will get you moving, although you may just want to go and cheer on your favorite team. Open to all riders, there will be prizes in categories for various levels including children 14 and under, junior races under age 19 and others through the over-50 masters category.

Price: $5 to $30, depending on category.

4. Flea Market at in Pine.

When/Where: 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 15, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 16. Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 3281 Wexford Road, Wexford, lower level parking lot.

Why go: Look for bargains on furniture, exercise equipment and other household goods.

Price: Free.

5. Bridget's Book Club. Tired of those book clubs where you only read depressing, sad, weepy books? Join a new “happy” book club.

When/Where: 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at , 4015 Dickey Road, Gibsonia

Why go: This meeting kicks off formation of the group. Members will decide when they are going to meet and what they will read. Rest assured, they will be good books, just not ones that make you sad.

Price: Free.

6.  UPMC Health Plan/Genesis Riverside Run features run/walk, 5K and 10K runs.  

When/Where: 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, at Heinz Field, 100 Art Rooney Ave., Pittsburgh.

Why go: It’s another opportunity to take advantage of spring weather and enjoy the beautiful sites of downtown Pittsburgh. The run benefits Genesis of Pittsburgh Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to pregnant women, children and adoptive families.
