Get Out Weekend Planner: Big Band Music, Prom Fashion Show and More

One event is going to the dogs – Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association Dog Show, that is.

1. Big Band Night for senior citizens -- The Pine-Richland High School Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Brian Scott will perform songs from the Big Band era.

When/Where:  6 -8 p.m.  Friday, April 1; , 100 Pine Park Drive, Wexford.

Why go: Visit with friends and enjoy delicious appetizers while listening to excellent tunes.

2. "City of Lights" Prom Fashion Show -- Come see what the latest prom fashions are at this annual show sponsored by the Pine-Richland High School Parent Support Group.

When/Where: At noon, doors open for a Chinese Auction display and bidding; fashion show begins at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 2, in the auditorium at , 700 Warrendale Road, Gibsonia.

Why go: High school students model beautiful prom fashions provided by local vendors. The show helps offset the cost of the school's After-Prom Party. Desserts and beverages are available at intermission.

3.   OOPS -- This is sold out. “April Fool’s Day Massacre” Murder Mystery is featured this weekend at Kean Theatre and the show includes dinner.

What's Next/When/Where: "Noises Off," a comedic play within a play, is the next performance at the Kean Theatre -- April 29-30, May 1, 6-8 at Kean Theatre, 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia.

Why go: The play is hailed as a hysterical romp. Who doesn't like to laugh?

Price: $22-$47. Tickets are available for show only or for dinner at Atria's and the show. (For the matinee on Sundays, lunch is at 12:30 p.m.)

4. 89th Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association Inc. Dog Show

When/Where: Doors open at 7 a.m. with judging beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3. Monroeville Convention Center, 209 Mall Blvd., Monroeville.  

Why go: There will be more than 1,000 purebred dogs competing for “Best of Show.” For those interested in learning more about buying a family pet, “Meet the Breed” sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dozens of vendors will be at the show also.

Price: Adults: $9; Children ages 4-10: $3; children under 4 years: free. Parking is free.

 5.  Guitars Over Cancer – A Film Concert  

This film concert recorded last year in the Strip District showcases Pittsburgh musicians. Proceeds benefit the Mario Lemieux Foundation, the Susan G Komen for the Cure foundation and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Proceeds also will be donated to the Canine Cancer Foundation.

When/Where: 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 3; Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Melwood Screening Room, 477 Melwood Ave. in north Oakland.

Why go: You see a wonderful film concert and benefit several great causes. 

Price: Tickets are $25 with limited seating; after-film party and refreshments included.
