Get Out Weekend Planner

Free movies at the park, Lakefest, Redd Up Thread Up sale and the Fabulous Hubcaps top the list of events this weekend.

 1. Now that school is out, kids can stay up late even on a school night and the whole family can take in a free movie at ! Kick off your weekend early with the “Movie in the Park” series featuring "Grown Ups," rated PG-13.

When/Where: Dusk on Thursday at the barn in the Richland Community Park, 1049 Van Velsor Drive, Bakerstown. Please note that in case of rain, the movie will be canceled. Bring your own chairs and refreshments.

Why go: It is always nice to enjoy the beautiful, summer weather and take in a good family film.

2. The Fabulous Hubcaps are back at the this weekend.

When/Where: 8 p.m. Saturday. For the dinner-and-show package, arrive at in time for a 6 p.m. meal. The show is at the Kean Theatre, 5847 Meridian Road, Gibsonia. 

Why go: The Fabulous Hubcaps play great oldies music from the 1950s, '60s and '70s. Come join the fun.

Price: Show only is $45; dinner-and-show package is $64.

3. The North Park Lake is back in business, and Allegheny County is celebrating with the “North Park Lakefest this weekend. 

When/Where: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Grand reopening ceremony is 11:30 a.m. There is a full lineup of activities including a 5K Fun Run & Walk; bike rides; free swimming at the North Park pool and more.

Why go: is an icon for those of us in the North Hills. This is a perfect time to enjoy some of the attractions at the park and reintroduce your family to the lake.

Price: Free.

4. Visit another nearby park for the Riverview Park 5K. 

When/Where: 7 p.m. Friday at Riverview Park located at corner of Riverview Avenue and Riverview Drive, North Side of Pittsburgh.

Why go: The Riverview Park 5K is part of the Citibank’s Community Footraces Series. The Riverview Park race takes place in the North Side Park, a charming little park in the hills with a challenging course.

Price: $15.

5. Do you have clothes in your closet that you never wear? Maybe you need some new clothes, but don’t want to drop a bundle. How about cleaning out the closet for a good cause? The Redd Up Thread Up event may be for you. 

When/Where: noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at PUB:THINK, 120 Federal St., Pittsburgh (Old Firewater’s Pub location). You may drop off donations from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 8 through 10 and receive a discounted tote bag ($5) to “shop” at the event. Additional tote bags can be purchased for $10. All of the proceeds from Redd Up Thread Up will go to East End Cooperative Ministries.

Why go: The event is for a good cause and it's a good excuse to clean out your closet!

 Price: Free but you will want to purchase a bag to shop.

6. Get ready for summer reading and pick up a book or two for the beach at the Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry’s Annual Used Book Sale

When/Where: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. now through Saturday at the Shoppes at Northway (formerly Northway Mall), 8000 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh.

Why go: Proceeds from this sale benefit Anchorpoint. Formerly North Hills Youth Ministry Counseling Center, Anchorpoint provides services that include low-cost family counseling, tutoring and more for the families in the North Hills area.

Price: Free, but take plenty of cash for great book bargains.
