Bone Collector's Nick Mundt Dishes on Upcoming Season, Field & Stream Appearance

The star of the hunting show on the Outdoor Channel will be at the new store in Cranberry Friday to sign autographs and meet fans.

Even when he’s not in far-off locales on big game hunts, Nick Mundt isn’t one to rest on his laurels.

“It’s in my blood. I’ve been doing this a long time,” he said with a laugh. “They call me the gypsy of the group.”

One of the stars of the reality hunting reality Bone Collector on the Outdoor Channel, Mundt, 40,  spent the last week making appearances at two stores a day along the east coast to talk hunting and meet with fans.

On Friday, his travels will bring him to Cranberry, where he and his Bone Collector co-hosts, Michael Waddell and Travis “T-Bone” Turner, will be singing autographs and posing for photos for the grand opening of the newField & Stream store along Route 19.

“I’m really lucky to get to do what I do,” he said. “It’s just a dream come true for me.”

A barber by trade, Mundt, a South Dakota native, began guiding hunting tours for Jeff and Deb Smith, owners of Seven J Outfitters in Wyoming, in the mid 1990s.

“I guided tours for white tails, mule deer and antelope,” he said. “I always had my video camera with me.”

Eventually he met and hit it off with producer David Blanton, who offered him a job running the camera for a Realtree Outdoors show. He also made several appearances on the program Realtree Road Trips.

Mundt also became friends with Waddell, who invited him to become a co-host on his new show, Bone Collector.

That was five years ago.

As part of the show, Mundt has participated on hunts in Mexico, Alaska, Colorado, Africa, Canada and just about everywhere in between.

One of his favorite hunts was a trip to the far east of Russia to hunt brown bears with his father. Mundt said it took four days just to reach the remote location.

“It’s something my dad and I have always wanted to do,” he said.

Up next, Mundt in September begins shooting the next season of Bone Collector.

For season six, Mundt said the Bone Collectors would journey to the Yukon to hunt moose and grizzly bears and to the Mexican desert to fete out the big horn sheep.

In the meantime, Mundt, who is single (and looking, he jokes), is anticipating meeting fans at the Cranberry Field & Stream Store.

The Bone Collectors will be at the outdoors specialty store from 12 to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16.

The Outdoor Channel stars also will take part in the annual Bone Collector Brotherhood Bash at 6 p.m. Friday at Stage AE on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

The free concert will feature performances by Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson, Mark Chestnutt and others.

“It’s just amazing the amount of fans we have, especially in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Virginia,” Mundt said. “We just have a huge following up here. For so many people, it’s a family sport.”
