Students! Are you interested in the medical field?

By Aafke Loney

On Friday, August 23, a high school senior participated in a job shadow experience at Drs Sauer and Leibensperger Family Practice, PC. located beside Ohio Valley General Hospital in McKees Rocks, PA. The job shadow was coordinated by Business and Education Connected, LLC, a career development organization in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The job shadow provided the student with opportunities to gather information on a being a general practitioner. The student previously met with executives at Business and Education Connected, LLC, to complete strengths and interest assessments and review complementing careers.  This particular high school senior had inclinations towards the medical field.  Dr. Leibensperger had very graciously provided this job shadowing opportunity and supported the interests of this student by planning the job shadow where the student learned the rewards and challenges of being a general practitioner.  The student observed and asked questions throughout the day.  The questions had been prepared for in advance to assist in gathering information about educational requirements, experience, compensation, expectations, and the work culture.  This experience helped the student by connecting the work site experience to real life decisions by bringing clarity and understanding to possible career pathways, related skills requirements, and various aspects of the medical industry and post-secondary education options.

Aafke Loney, President of Business and Education Connected, LLC, met with the student following the job shadow to review the experience. The student learned Dr. Leibensperger had desired to be a doctor at a young age and that he absolutely loves being a doctor.  Dr. Leibensperger also recommended to the student that when in college and considering the medical field to take as many business and psychology classes as possible in addition to the required medical classes.  The reason was there are many business decisions and counseling needs made on a daily basis in a medical practice.

Through this job shadow the student discovered certain areas in the medical field that were more intriguing than others.  The student enjoyed the variety of patients that would come in with different medical problems and the ability to diagnosis each patient. The student felt the job shadow with Dr. Leibensperger was helpful in that it “narrowed it down and broadened it out” meaning the student began to understand what area of the medical field to focus on and could begin to research various careers in this focused area. This student said, “I gained perspective, at least knowing what a physician did confirmed my interest in the medical field.”
