U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire today endorsed Rep. Mark Critz at a rally in downtown Pittsburgh in front of the Allegheny County Courthouse. Altmire, 44, of McCandless, was joined by Critz, 50, of Johnstown, Cambria County, at the rally that also included Democratic elected officials and leaders from Allegheny and Beaver counties, including Congressman Mike Doyle, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Allegheny County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Nancy Mills.  Others who attended the rally included Beaver County Commissioners Joe Spanik and Tony Amadio, among other elected officials and leaders, who endorsed Critz in the race for the 12th Congressional District seat. Tom Smith, Pennsylvania's GOP candidate for U.S. Senate, attended Friday’s event.

Fresh from winning the Republican nod in Tuesday’s primary election, Armstrong County’s Tom Smith—who will face incumbent Sen. Bob Casey in November’s U.S. Senate race—was among the crowd gathered Friday at North Boundary Park in Cranberry for a Tea Party Express rally. “This is the grass roots and this is what’s going to get this country back on track,” said Smith, who was endorsed today by the Tea Party Express. “These are my kind of people.” Billed as the nation’s largest Tea Party political action committee, The Tea Party Express was in Cranberry to kick off its Restoring the American Dream national bus tour. Maher Wins GOP Nomination For Auditor General

The Upper St. Clair Republican will face state Rep. Eugene DePasquale in the November general election.

State Rep. John Maher defeated Frank Pinto in the Republican nomination for Pennsylvania auditor general. "The voters declared today that Pennsylvania deserves an auditor for auditor general," Maher said during his victory speech at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Bethel Park. Maher will face state Rep. Eugene DePasquale of York County in the November general election. DePasquale was unopposed for the Democratic nomination. He grew up in Pittsburgh and is a Central Catholic High School graduate. "Remember this is an office which has only been won one time in 50 years by a Republican," Maher said. "We need about 1 million Democrats to win (the November general election) and I believe there are 1 million Democrats in the state who understand that …

Romney Is Easy Winner of Republican Primary Contest in PA

Critz defeats Altmire in congressional race, Raja wins bitter contest with Mustio for state senate seat.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney had little trouble winning the Pennsylvania Republican primary for President of the United States, with his closest competition coming from a man who no longer is in the race.  Romney finished with 57 percent of the vote, followed by former Sen. Rick Santorum at 19 percent. Santorum withdrew from the race earlier this month. Texas congressman Ron Paul finished third with 13 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was last with 11 percent of the vote.  In the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, incumbent Sen. Bob Casey of Lackawanna County easily defeated Joseph Vodvarka of Robinson Township, Allegheny County, by a four-to-one margin in the Democratic primary.  Vodvarka who spent the evening …

Primary Election 2012 Turnout Low in Pine-Richland

No problems reported with trial run of asking voters for photo IDs.

Voters turned out slowly for Tuesday's primary election in polling places around Pine and Richland townships, and few had problems with presenting a photo ID to poll workers. But many had trouble parking at Pine-Richland Stadium where Pine Districts 1, 2 and 3 vote. "There were no parking places at all," said District 1 majority inspector Pat Pegher, adding that people double-parked in the stadium lot that is used for Pine-Richland High School. "Everyone is complaining about parking," said Connie Fill, minority inspector for Pine District 2. The poll workers were surprised that the high school students did not show up to vote when their school day ended. "We thought we would get a lot more of the teenagers after school, but we didn't," …

One way or another Mike McMullen is going to the Republican National Convention this year. The Gibsonia resident is on Tuesday's ballot twice—looking for votes to be a delegate or an alternative delegate to the Aug. 27-30 convention in Tampa Bay, FL. Ten people are running for four delegate spots to represent the 12th congressional district: McMullen is assured of being elected as an alternate delegate because three people are running for four spots. The other candidates are Sara Kennedy of Allison Park and Carol A. Pruchnic of Johnstown. The 41-year-old from Hampton Township served previously as an alternate delegate in 1996 and 2008, he said. Describing himself as a mainstream conservative, McMullen said he has been an active Republican …

Election 2012: Rep. Mike Turzai Runs Unopposed

The incumbent was first elected in 2001.

Rep. Mike Turzai is sitting in the catbird seat when it comes to the 2012 election. The ballot for Tuesday's primary tells it succinctly: No one is challenging the incumbent for the Republican spot on the ballot for the 28th Legislative District seat and the Democrats are running no one for the seat either. Unless something extraordinary happens, Turzai (R-Bradford Woods) will be re-elected in November to the seat he has held since 2001. He currently represents the citizens of Pine, Richland, Marshall, McCandless, Bradford Woods and Franklin Park. A proposed redistricting plan would drop Richland from his district in the future. The House Republican Caucus elected Turzai to serve as the majority leader for the 2011-12 session.   In that …
