Elected officials and leaders stress the importance of sending Critz to Congress.
U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire today endorsed Rep. Mark Critz at a rally in downtown Pittsburgh in front of the Allegheny County Courthouse. Altmire, 44, of McCandless, was joined by Critz, 50, of Johnstown, Cambria County, at the rally that also included Democratic elected officials and leaders from Allegheny and Beaver counties, including Congressman Mike Doyle, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Allegheny County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Nancy Mills. Others who attended the rally included Beaver County Commissioners Joe Spanik and Tony Amadio, among other elected officials and leaders, who endorsed Critz in the race for the 12th Congressional District seat. Fresh from winning the Republican nod in Tuesday’s primary election, Armstrong County’s Tom Smith—who will face incumbent Sen. State Rep. John Maher defeated Frank Pinto in the Republican nomination for Pennsylvania auditor general. "The voters declared today that Pennsylvania deserves an auditor for auditor general," Maher said during his victory speech at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Bethel Park. Maher will face state Rep. Eugene DePasquale of York County in the November general election. DePasquale was unopposed for the Democratic nomination. He grew up in Pittsburgh and is a Central Catholic High School graduate. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney had little trouble winning the Pennsylvania Republican primary for President of the United States, with his closest competition coming from a man who no longer is in the race. Romney finished with 57 percent of the vote, followed by former Sen. Rick Santorum at 19 percent. Santorum withdrew from the race earlier this month. Texas congressman Ron Paul finished third with 13 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was last with 11 percent of the vote. In the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, incumbent Sen.
