About this column:
Pine-Richland Patch and Animal Friends bring you a pet in need of a forever home every week.Joan is a sweet dog who loves to play! If you are looking for a new jogging partner or a companion to put some energy in your life, Joan is the dog for you. Joan is high energy and dreams of finding an active family to keep her moving and happy. A fenced-in yard would help Joan run off some of her excess energy.Joan loves to play. We would recommend that she goes to a home with older children who can handle her when she’s in full play mode. She was never taught how to act when she’s on a leash, but has made much progress since she’s been here at Animal Friends! We’d like for her future family…
Meet our resident rocker, Flame! This gorgeous boy is overflowing with cat-itude! Flame was a stray cat for nine long months. We’re told he was known to “trust anyone”—jumping into an open car door, sauntering in to unfamiliar houses, and even following a family while they walked their dog. Talk about purr-sonality!Flame knows how special he is and demands that you know it too. He’ll tell you when he’s done being social, and because he can be forceful with his opinions, we don’t recommend him for a home with small children who might not understand his need for personal space. We also think …
Peaches and Thumper are a sweet, wonderful pair looking for their forever home. They came to Animal Friends together after their owner could no longer care for them. Peaches and Thumper are bonded. This means they are very close and need to go to a home together. But don't think that means they are exactly alike! Peaches, the sweet, adventurous bunny of the two, enjoys digging in his litter box and tossing his toys around. Peaches is an enthusatic chewer and even nibbled on his previous owner’s jeans when he was little. Make sure to give him lots of toys to play with and chew so your pants …
You sometimes hear about homes that are considered “fixer-uppers.” They make wonderful, meaningful projects for new owners to pour their love and personalities into. Well, Primo is a fixer-upper—one with a sweet grin and cute little ears. He's more than worth the attention he needs. Primo has come a long way since he was rescued and brought to Animal Friends. Finally, he basks in the gentle, encouraging touch of our volunteers … which is a far cry from life in the basement from which he was rescued. Right now this frightened dog is motivated by food. He loves his Kibble. With some coaxing and…
Are you looking for a low-maintenance, independent canine companion? If so, meet Snoops, a charming 10-year-old Chow mix awaiting his forever home at Animal Friends. Snoops was adopted from Animal Friends as a small pup, but made his way back here when his family moved and could not take him with them. Like most Chows, Snoops is an intelligent and independent dog. He is highly curious of his surroundings. He is quite smart and has already mastered several basic dog skills, such as “sit,” “paw,” and housetraining. Snoops walks beautifully on leash and never pulls or jumps while enjoying his …
We use the terms “affectionate” and “playful” a lot when describing our pets. But take those two words and multiply them by 10 and you’ll get an idea about our pal Sourdough. This cat is beyond friendly. He’ll rub up against your ankles when you enter a room to greet you and when you reach toward him, he’ll lunge forward to headbutt and rub your hand. When he's in "lap cat mode," Sourdough simply turns into sweet bread (hence his name!). You’ll have a best friend with this chipper and slightly stout cat. So, if you’re looking for the fun-loving and warmhearted spirit of a dog, but only have …
There are not enough positive adjectives in the English dictionary to explain Farfell and all of her loveliness, but we’ll try anyway! Farfell is exceptionally sweet, affectionate and gentle. She sports her beautiful white coat with subtle black spots on her ears and head so well that we think you will be smitten with her at first sight. She is playful and friendly and likes to be held. Farfell is an altogether great bunny who would benefit from finding a home where she can settle right in and be herself. Click here to watch her video! Then come meet her at Animal Friends! Farfell has been …
Willie the Weimaraner is looking for a special someone to take him home. Willie is a very active kind of guy and needs a family who will keep up with him. He loves long walks and hikes in the park. (He loves to bird watch, too!) He also loves car rides! Some time to run around outside in a fenced area would make Willie a very happy dog. Willie is incredibly affectionate and very friendly. Let him impress you with the commands he knows now and rest assured that Willie will learn many more under your care. He is very smart and very food motivated. We discovered during his training sessions …
Meet an amazing family of dogs! This is Vayda, Virgil, Vienna and Vinny. Our Humane Officers met them last winter when they followed a tip that this beautiful group of dogs had been abandoned in a home. The "V Pits," as they came to be known, were found living in freezing, terrible conditions. Our officers brought them back to Animal Friends. Never having been treated like members of a family before, the V Pits had a long journey ahead of them. So, our staff and volunteers got to work, socializing them and showing them what it means to be loved! They are still shy at first, but once they …
Meet Bandit, our own master of disguise. A casual look might reveal an empty cage. Do you see only a pillowcase and a few toys? Look closer! Our shy little Bandit may be that lump under the cat bed. This black-and-white striped beauty has eyes the color of spring-green leaves. Earn her trust, and she will roll over, around and upside down in a squirm-fest of affectionate appreciation. Two hands may be needed, as she can't seem to get enough of your love.Bandit was found as a stray and taken in by a family, but ended up at Animal Friends because of an owner's allergies. Somewhere along the …
The boxer is one of the canine world's characters and 2-year-old Coco Sue is no exception! She loves attention and her docked tail wags a mile a minute when she is petted. Coco is very playful and energetic and when left to run freely in our play yards, she will "burst" out into the Animal Friends yard and run at full speed from end to end making several laps in no time at all. Her concept of exercise seems to be that life is to be lived at full speed. Coco Sue loves all types of toys, especially balls that she can chase. She would make a great running partner. Coco Sue recently spent some …
Squirrel is a gorgeous young lady with soft shiny fur! Just like her namesake, Squirrel loves to run and play. She is an active girl who loves to go for walks! She's very friendly and sociable with everyone she meets when she is out with our Animal Friends volunteers. Whether chasing tennis balls or going for a long walk, she would be an ideal match for an active family looking for a perfect four-footed companion to join in the fun. Typical for her Akita breed, she can be somewhat independent and aloof at times, but definitely remembers her friends and gets very excited when you approach her …
It's your lucky day! Lazarus is patiently awaiting a chance to capture your heart. He has a winning combination of good looks and an easy-going personality. His handsome face has a unique nose with a satiny texture against velvety black fur. His voice has a charmingly soft and gravely tone. Lazarus is a confident cat that responds well to petting and brushing, and he's gentle and calm on a lap. He's quite the athlete too; his favorite sport is a rousing chase with the laser light. Lazarus came to Animal Friends when his caregiver passed away. It's obvious that he was well-loved. Lazarus …
Brownie Boy is a very sweet, people-oriented dog but he can be a little timid around new friends and places. We think he’s a little cautious around new people because he has been abandoned before. If you take the time to know him and give him treats and some gentle love, we’re sure he can begin to trust you. He likes car rides but sometimes needs some encouragement to jump up into the car. Once he’s in the car though, boy, does he like to feel the breeze on his face! His foster parents reported that he walks nicely on a leash and loves long walks. Walks are also a perfect opportunity to meet …
Fluffy is a very sweet, gentle, snow white rabbit. What she lacks in pigment, she makes up for in personality! At age 4, Fluffy is old enough to be past all that crazy, young bunny energy. She enjoys the quiet life and loves to be petted gently and being talked to softly. She will let you hold her, but on her own terms. She will let you know when she's had enough. She prefers to just relax on the floor and loves when you join her. Because of this, she is the perfect nap companion! Fluffy, like all rabbits, doesn't like to be cooped up in her cage all day. She needs some room to stretch her …
Sully is a cat who isn’t afraid to speak up for himself! This sweet, lovable guy was found as a stray, then transferred from shelter to shelter until he ended up here at Animal Friends. (We like to believe he told everyone that he wanted to come here!) Sully is FIV+, which means that he has a weakened immune system but he doesn’t let that slow him down. He can play, jump, run and climb just like any other cat. He enjoys people and likes to climb up into laps for attention. His favorite spot to sit in his room is on the bookcase by the window so that he can meow at people who walk by. It seems…
This gorgeous, amazing and dapper gentleman is a celebrity at Animal Friends. He was found as a stray on Downeysville Road. So just to clarify, he’s not The Iron Man. We just had to think creatively when naming such a charming pooch who came to us from the streets. Friendly and affectionate, Robert Downey, or Rob as he’s sometimes called, will glance at you with his relatively tiny but expressive eyes and nudge your hand with his magnificent nose. He just wants to love and be loved. He’s strong, active and will keep you in shape during all the energetic walks you’ll share together. Your …
Poor Miranda Marie has gone through a lot of changes recently. Her previous owner passed away and, even though she was lucky enough to be taken in by a family friend, she did not get along with the cats in his home and ended up back at Animal Friends. Miranda Marie has been known to be a bit aloof, but that doesn't mean she won't appreciate some quality time with you! Swinging a feather toy or putting down some cat nip is a quick way to get Miranda Marie to perk up. She is a little shy around men but we're sure she will come around if you spend some time with her. We feel that she would …
Anyone want to play ball? Then come meet Harry! He’ll retrieve the ball and drop it so that you can throw it again and again. He can even catch the ball on a bounce and never seems to get tired of the game. Harry looks like a yellow Labrador Retriever, but his legs are short! That doesn’t affect his enthusiasm for running and playing. Harry is friendly, social and smart! He has learned to sit and lie down during his stay at Animal Friends. This energetic young guy is looking for an active family who has previous experience with owning dogs and no children in the home under the age of 12. A …
Andy is a beautiful cat, but his past wasn't pretty. In his former home, he was allowed to be an indoor/outdoor cat. Going outside is very dangerous for cats; they can be hit by cars, attacked by other animals and exposed to parasites and diseases. On one of Andy's trips outside, he contracted a disease known as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV is similar to HIV in humans; however, there is no such thing as kitty AIDS! FIV weakens the cat's immune system which makes them more susceptible to illness. FIV+ cats can live long, healthy and happy lives, but they do need more frequent trips…
