Amazing Awnings

It’s hard not to love awnings.  They work with any style of home whether it be traditional, contemporary, modern or provincial.  They add a soft touch, coolness in summer and a touch of elegance that only a beautiful awning can add. They have a long life, lasting sometimes 20 years.  I particularly love the multi stripes, as well as the many solids with trim, fringe or just a solid complimentary braid trim.

I particularly like a large awning that covers deck, or patio, with drops on all sides.  The drops enclose the exterior room against rain, winds and the coolness of night.  It also protects upholstered furniture from the elements.  My former
house had a second story deck covered by an awning with the drops.  We had an entire outdoor living area because of the awning, and it even included cable television.  My children used our covered, exterior room into the cool fall months adding that wonderful extra living space we all desire.

My current home has a screened in porch with screen panels on two sides.  The screened panels also have drops that are closed at night or during a rainstorm.  They add some needed color and dimension to the house too.

The New York Times just ran a story about how awnings are falling out of favor in the Big Apple http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/26/nyregion/once-a-staple-awnings-are-losing-their-appeal.html.

Obviously this pertains to New York and specificly awnings over stoops, but it made me a little bit sad to read it, because I kind of think they give homes character.
