P-R Varsity, JV Teams Lose to North Allegheny

P-R alumni team triumphs in "The Ice Storm" games at North Park Ice Rink.

Monday night, "The Ice Storm" games, which pit Pine-Richland against rival North Allegheny, were watched by crowds of cheering fans under the bright lights of the North Park Ice Rink

This was a rare opportunity to see the high schools face off: They don't play each other in league games because NA is AAA and P-R is at the AA level.

  • Pine-Richland's junior varsity team lost to North Allegheny, 4-1.
  • Pine-Richland's varsity team lost to North Allegheny,  4-2.
  • Pine-Richland's alumni team beat North Allegheny, 5-1.

According to Pine-Richland coach Mike Bagnato, the event was a success.

"We had a really really good night," he said. "It was an outdoor game and some of our alumni haven't had the chance to experience an outdoor game."

Among the Pine-Richland alumni playing was George Saad, a forward for the Penn State Hockey team. George Saad's brother, Brandon Saad, is currently competing on the U.S. team at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship in Canada.

Pittsburgh Pirate and Pine-Richland alum Neil Walker was at center ice to drop the first puck. Y108's Stoney Richards was the announcer.

The National Anthem was sung by Maddie Ince from Pine-Richland Middle School and Leah Griffin from North Allegheny High School.  Both girls are sisters of varsity players and former teammates on the North Pittsburgh Wildcats Girls U19 hockey team.
