Giant Eagle Ends Foodperks, Adds Incentive to Fuelperks
The last day to earn the perks will be Feb. 13.
Giant Eagle is ending foodperks! and adding extra incentive to use its fuelperks! program, according a press release from the Pennsylvania-based company.
The foodperks! program, which began in 2009, gives customers a 1 percent discount on groceries for every 10 gallons of gas purchased at GetGo gas stations.
That changes Feb. 7 with a 3-cent program that is similar to what competitor Sheetz offers.
"The new GetGo 3-cent program is simple," Borella said. "Every time a customer scans his or her Giant Eagle Advantage Card while fueling at GetGo and isn’t redeeming fuelperks!, he or she will receive 3 cents off per gallon."
The last day to earn foodperks! will be Feb. 13 and discounts must be redeemed by May 31.
The foodperks! program is being discontinued “based on feedback from customers who have told us it was a little too complex,” writes CEO Laura Karet in a letter sent to customers receiving the highest level of savings with foodperks!
Giant Eagle began to issue letters to those customers along special offers like $10 off Rewards Cards in appreciation of their loyalty. These letters began to arrive late last week and will continue to be delivered to customer mailboxes through this week.
"Giant Eagle had a thorough and thoughtful plan to communicate the changes this week, however the targeted mailers’ premature delivery preempted that plan. Giant Eagle truly apologizes to any letter recipients who were offended and/or misinterpreted its language," Senior Director of Corporate Communications Rob Borella said.

Too complicated - really? REALLY????? COME ON GIANT EAGLE - do you really expect us to believe that is the reason you chose to discontinue this program? Your prices are considerably higher than the competition - the fuel perks helped......I won't be shopping at your stores going forward.

Uhmm, doesn't sound like they are discontinuing FUELperks, just the FoodPerks program that went the other way -- saving a percentage on food purchases when one would buy fuel at GetGo.

I only bought gas for the food perk program. Now I am free to shop around for gas.

I saved well over $1000 on the food- and fuel-perks programs and now I will be shopping elsewhere, where prices are cheaper. What's next Giant Eagle? No more double coupons? And the "it's too complicated" excuse is not sitting well with those of us who understood and knew how to use the program. This is unfortunate.
