Favorite Fish Fry: St. Alphonsus Wins Honor by a Landslide

St. Alphonsus serves fish and shrimp every Friday during Lent.

We asked who has the best fish fry, and Pine-Richland Patch voters gave an overwhelming answer: St. Alphonsus.

When voting ended Friday morning, 88 percent of voters had declared their love for the annual Lenten fish fry event held at St. Alphonsus School, which is next door to St Alphonsus Church in Wexford.

I have to admit. I wasn't surprised.

My husband and I dined there last week and found the food was delicious, and the service provided by volunteers was phenomenal. The price was good too.

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the fundraiser that grew out of the Pine Township parish’s “Get It Done” campaign to pay off the school’s addition debt.

St. Alphonsus church and school are at 201 Church Road in Wexford.

On average, 1,100 dinners are sold each week with the help of about 100 volunteers. That amounts to 600 pounds of Atlantic cod and 60 pounds of shrimp per week served with side dishes, soups, homemade condiments and desserts, fresh brewed iced tea and other beverages.

Eat-in or takeout adult meals are $9; children's meals are $2.

For takeout orders, you may call ahead to order after 1 p.m. at 724-759-8659 or 412-304-1254 and specify a pick up time of 4:30 p.m. or later.

Here is the Friday dinner menu:

  • Choice of entrée: breaded, fried shrimp or baked Atlantic cod or breaded, fried Atlantic cod. Can be requested as a sandwich.
  • Choice of one soup: New England clam chowder or tomato Florentine
  • Choice of one side: macaroni and cheese, french fries or baked potato
  • Choice of one salad: applesauce or coleslaw
  • Choice of beverage

Items are also available a la carte and individually priced.
