Rep. Jason Altmire Opposes Repeal of Health Care Reform Law
House voted Wednesday to repeal the federal health care overhaul.
U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-4th District, released a statement today (Wednesday) explaining why he opposes repealing the 2010 health care reform law.
House lawmakers voted Wednesday to repeal the federal health care overhaul—the latest in a long line of anti-ObamaCare votes, but the first vote since the Supreme Court upheld the law, according to Fox News.
The vote was 244 to 185, with five Democrats voting for repeal—Jim Matheson of Utah, Larry Kissell and Mike McIntyre of North Carolina, Dan Boren of Oklahoma, and Mike Ross of Arkansas, according to NBC Politics on msnbc.com.
No Republicans voted against the repeal.
“I will not support the repeal bill that is being put forth by House leadership and faces certain defeat in the Senate. Congress needs do what we should have been doing all along—working together in a bipartisan fashion to improve upon the law and bring down health care costs," Altmire stated.
“When this vote came before the House the first time, I refused to waste the time and resources of the American taxpayers by engaging in a purely partisan exercise that had no chance of becoming law.
“I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to improve the parts of this legislation that are bad policy—including the 2.3 percent tax imposed on American-manufactured medical devices—and enact real reforms that improve the quality and affordability of health care for all Americans."
Altmire said he originally voted against the 2010 health care reform bill because his constituents were overwhelmingly against it, and he believed the bill was flawed policy.
"I never argued, however, that it was unconstitutional, and now that the Supreme Court has upheld the law, including the individual mandate, health care providers, hospitals, and doctors can move forward with implementation knowing that the patients they see will have coverage," Altmire said. "The decision also provides certainty to American families, businesses and the government as they plan for the long-term."
What do you think about Altmire's stand on the 2010 health care reform law, which is also called Obamacare? Tell us in the comments.

So he voted against it in 2010, but he voted for it today?
Spineless.
I don't care if it is considered constitutional or not. The fact is, it makes no economic sense. It won't lower health care costs.
Economics 101 says that subsidies artificially inflate demand and PRICE.
Health care
Housing
Education
Three most heavily subsidized industries in the US.
Three industries with the highest rates of price inflation.
It is no coincidence.
SUBSIDIES DON'T WORK PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!
If we really want to make health care more affordable for all, we should reduce subsidies.
Are televisions subsidized? NO!! And they get better and cheaper every year. Are cell phones subsidized? NO!!!!!!!! And they get better and cheaper every year. How does that happen without socialists like Obama "helping us" pay for them?????
Wake up people.

Quoting: "The decision also provides certainty to American families, businesses and the government as they plan for the long-term."
Excuse me. What family or business will move ahead in July 2012 with long term plans with Obamacare? Is Mr. Altmire this far out of touch. I used to like much of what he had to say regarding business. But, this statement is so wrong.
The status of this piece of legislation is so far in the air, I can't believe anybody would be making plans. Last week (week before?), a report said that 13,000 pages of regulations have been drafted so far. And, this part is just the beginning! There are only a few certainties with Obamacare, and the costs. Anybody making plans would be foolish.
Sorry, Mr. Altmire, you have to find better reasons in voting "no" on this repeal vote.

This has nothing to do with being rich or getting sick - it is purely economical. For example:
1. Due to mandating employer provide free insurance to all of their employees, business will hire fewer people (they can reduce their costs, by just not hiring!),
2. The healthcare bill (as passed) creates 21 new taxes on US citizens (not the rich - everybody!), not raises taxes - creates new ones!
Be careful what you ask for.

Ken, you are so right. I am a living example of how my health care coverage has been RUINED since Obamacare passed. Natasha, I want health care REFORM - not this socialized medicine that ruins the best health care industry in the world and ruins our country. Have you read the bill? I have. We can't afford it. And it rations care, and anyone who says it does not is lying. We CANNOT keep our current insurance OR the doctors we now have if we want to. It's a lie -- read the bill. The taxes we pay will skyrocket. You don't seem to realize that Obamacare will lead to this: people with resources will be able to purchase good health care and the rest of us middle class slobs will end up with Obamacare and no choices. We'll have to deal with the IPAB -- a small board of appointees (they are not doctors) who will make major decisions about what is covered under Obamacare. And let's not forget all of the Federal officials & employees, Senate, Congress and their buddies/favorite organizations who have "waivers." They don't have to use or comply with Obamacare. Just think about that. If Obamacare was such a good deal, why have the House & Senate exempted themselves from having to use it? READ THE BILL PLEASE. And PLEASE take care of yourself and your health, because Obamacare will not pay for procedures/meds if you get to be a certain age. Beyond scary. This bill needs to be repealed and we need real health care reform to replace it. Good riddance, Rep. Altmire!

Something drastic needs to be done to the healthcare system, costs and coverage's are out of control, AND we need some form of universal coverage like every other industrialized nation. BTW Debra: we do NOT have the best health care system in the world, we have the 37th health care system in the world; as stated by the New England Journal of Medicine (http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp0910064)

@Steve, anybody can throw stones, what is your proposal for re-mediating the ailments of the US health care/health insurance (because in non-socialized medicine we are forced to consider them conjointly). I hear all the negative about "Obamacare" which was patterned after "Romneycare" which was originally a "Nixoncare" idea. I'd like to hear some all encompassing remedy which does not leave children, women, and men dying because they are not paid enough or cannot afford to pay for healthcare or the selectively granted and exorbitantly priced insurance? We as humans should not be forcing natural selection on our fellow humans because of a man made concept of economics. I always thought we were better than that, but I'm seeing lately that many are not.

What a weasel. Mr Altmire loves to be called Blue Dog Democrat, I have never trusted him. I believe only reason he voted against the health care bill in 2010 was that Ms Palosi had enough votes to pass it in the house and he would not have reelected if he had voted in the favor. Recall he had not made up his mind until the day of the vote, sure Ms Palosi had not told him which direction to go.
As to the comments regarding rich and never getting sick, please name a country where heath care is free and when patients get sick gets to see the doctor the same day? May not be perfect but US system works for the patients most of the times. Most of all I feel sorry for the Canadians, now where are they going to go to get treatment.

To all of you for national health care... I hope you never get sick. But more importantly, I hope your kids dont get sick. Because socialization of health care will reduce the number and quality of doctors and the rate of innovation.
What is really selfish, is that by demanding free health care, you will severely reduce development of new procedures, devices, treatments, etc.
So not only are you imposing the cost of your "free" healthcare on future generations in the form of deficit spending, you are also impairing the quality and availability of care for future generations.
Liberals are so selfish.

What a twisted pile of bs this is, Steve. People who are FOR affordable health care are selfish? I think that selfish is the people that are so buffered from what is happening with so many Americans that they couldn't care less for those LESS fortunate than them. That, my friend, is selfish and don't ever pretend that your lack of care for those people who are suffering is anything less than selfish. Thank God you haven't called yourself a Christian; the hypocrisy would be too much to bare.

The reasons Altmire opposed Obamacare in 2010 is very simple. Throughout his stint in Congress, the vast majority of his campaign contributions came from health professionals, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. Another reason Altmire opposed Obamacare is the fact that he was a lobbyist for UPMC before running for office. He's been drinking at the healthcare trough for years.
Back then, Altmire wasn’t about to bite the hands that feed him. Now he’s free from that yoke and can somewhat speak his mind. He’s really no different from the vast majority of politicians in Washington. Now that his taxpayer ride is over, I’m sure he’ll do just fine with another lobbying gig.

I actually never thought of myself as being 'selfish,' but Steve did make me reflect upon it. I'm a volunteer to the city's General Sessions every two weeks to evaluate the interaction and relationship the court has with 'citizen-invisible.' I participate in interracial relationships within my community as a facilitator for forums in order to create dialogue and action plans for bringing about the changes we believe in. I cannot see these as being selfish. I participate as a volunteer with a homeless shelter nearly every week and with a community kitchen every week to make it easier on those who have much less then most everyone else does. I'm an advocate for the Islamic community, and along that perspective I belong to a separation of church and state community that believes that fairness is a basic democratic idea. I cannot see these as selfish. I don't believe in the death penalty. I'm against making wars, bombs, and endless bases all over the world in order to intimidate and bully whip our foreign policy into being accepted by our neighbors. -- Our head is screwed on wrong. I can agree with you on this; if someone doesn't want health care they shouldn't be forced to obtain it, but for everyone else they should have it. -- What's selfish about that? I will say that I guess I am selfish about one thing. I like to read. I make plans for doing it. -- The truth is, we are both liberal and conservative in our bones. -- We choose our poison to live and die by.

@JDB – While I applaud your sense of community and your drive to help your fellow man, you didn’t really get Steve’s point.
Steve’s point is that when you have a group of citizens who declare that ownership of a private-sector commodity is their “right” and then demand that others pay for this supposed “right,” these citizens are exhibiting selfish behavior. Steve went on to also point out that in addition to being selfish, it also makes no sense practically.
Your other points are non sequiturs to issue at hand.

@Charles – There is a difference between healthcare services and health insurance – a concept most people cannot grasp. What Obamacare mandates is that all citizens buy a commodity (health insurance) from a private company (insurance provider) or face a tax.
But it goes further. It also mandates that taxpayers subsidize the commodity (health insurance) for those the government deems to indigent to pay for the commodity (health insurance) themselves. To accomplish this, Congress created no fewer than 21 taxes to fund this boondoggle.
One might ask, “Why is the government doing this?” The government is doing this to manipulate demand in hopes of driving down costs. Is it the role of government to manipulate commerce? Of course it is not the role of government. But who cares as long as people believe the new taxes will only hit those "greedy 1%ers" resulting in their premiums going down. Yay for free Obama money!
You left me with a quote, let me do the same, “Ten percent is good enough for Jesus. Well it oughta be enough for Uncle Sam.”

@Outraged Citizen, sounds like your more outraged at the government for much more than this attempt at healthcare reform, if that's the case we agree. I'd agree with your quote too if you changed "Jesus" to "God" (because tithing is an old testament command: Deuteronomy 14:22-29) and if the 10% applied to every industry except churches. Yes I'm saying Goliath's which so obviously are extremely profitable in a monopoly type environment (non-profits like Highmark and UPMC) for example should loose their non-profit status. BTW, I'm not a liberal I'm a Libertarian which is far more conservative than the current GOP.

@JDB – Steve isolated his comments to the topic of healthcare – liberals are so selfish. A better question would have been, “Is asking taxpayers to pay for the healthcare of others liberal?” Oh well, another time maybe.
Your comparison (healthcare v. wars) is not analogous as it compares apples and oranges. Forcing citizens to buy a private commodity (subsidized at taxpayer expense) is not the same as a department of government carrying out lawful orders. Therefore, it is a non sequitur to the issue at hand.

This is the 33rd time the Republican lead congress has voted to repeal Obamacare, do they not get it? The Senate will not repeal, stop wasting our money and get on with bipartisan work. Jason Altmire gets it, it is time to accept that it has been voted in and work together. This last repeal has cost the taxpayers 50 million dollars, I have not found a statistic that captures the cost of the other 32 times, plus the cost to have a decision by the supreme court. Would be interesting to add it up. I would think 50 million dollars could pay for a lot of flu shots, immunizations and wellness visits.

Not that it is any consolation to you, but I would rather Congress vote 33 times on something that’s actually important, rather than wasting time on whether baseball players used steroids, the need for a playoff system in college football or funding studies to find out mating habits of titmice.

Well Stacy, the reason WHY businesses aren't hiring is because of this healthcare law. They need to trim their workforce because of taxes they will be required to pay due to the rolling scale. Also, the Bush tax cuts are due to expire Jan. 1. EVERYONE'S taxes will go up. Cap gains , estate tax, all taxes. Business owners are nervous. Things are uncertain. If Obama loses, you'll see the economy improve and businesses start to hire again!!
Roger
8:52 am on Saturday, July 14, 2012
Ditto to what Regina said. When somebody chastises businesses for not using available cash to hire new workers, I never hear any of them saying they would do the same. In other words, when asked to risk their own cash, their words of suggesting others risk theirs, the demand goes hollow. At this time, why would ANY business expand and hire new workers?
The aroma coming from DC is filled with uncertainty. Remember December of 2010? Tax rates for 2011 were not established until a couple of days before January 1! Now, we are out less than six months before January 1, 2013, and what is settled? Fed income tax rates? Capital Gains tax rates? Dividend tax rates? Payroll tax rates? Estate tax rates and rules? Health insurance premium rates? Oh yes, the codes are all in place for the changes. But, will Congress have the political will to let them stand? History tells us that the uncertainty will fill the air until December 31, 2012.
Many who are critical of businesses believe that business planning happens just like Congress's actions on tax bills, wait until the last possible minute. Psssst, ... does not happen that way.
Leadership for our nation coming from DC, .... nah, it isn't happening!

That is not true what you are saying about companies. If you look at the real facts then you will see that companies were laying off and not hiring workers long before the Affordable Care Act was signed. Laying off American workers and not hiring American workers has little, if anything, to do with ACA. Foreign workers on visas effect the hiring of American workers much more, but that is another topic. Either way: The ACA is not what is causing companies to not hire American workers: Check out the timeline and facts.
Roger

Stacy, do you own a company that pays for health insurance for the employees? Do you manage the finances of a company that makes budgets for the HR department? What is certain about health care costs for 2013, 2014, 2015 for budgets?
Your assertions about the timing has nothing to do with 2013, 2014, etc. Yes, companies were laying off workers in 2008, but the financial climate was different at that time.
We've had previous exchanges, and you are unable to tell us what is certain with regard to financial obligations for a business. This includes health care, taxes, regulations, etc. If you know in your mind that all these items have a high level of certainty, then start telling the story to business owners. We aren't buying the current story, but maybe you have a different one.
Charles
6:53 pm on Monday, July 16, 2012
@Roger, I own a company. The cost uncertainty with ACA is no more uncertainty than we've been experiencing the last 20 years with regards to how much insurance carriers decided to raise their rates on our policies and which portion of those cost increases would be passed-on to employees (who at times were in a pay freeze), and what costs would be absorbed by the company to keep the benefits package competitive to aid in employee retention. These unpredictable cost increases were in no way tied to any measurable cost factor to forecast them for any number of years...even one year. Your conjuring economic environments to suit your argument or point-of-view, which is an un-defendable position to take.
Stacy

Dear Roger,
What I said exactly relates to what was being written by Regina. To say that companies are not hiring because of ACA is not true and facts and a timeline prove that. Again: companies were laying off and not adding American workers long before ACA was signed. That is exactly correct.
